Linkmodels on redirects

On a page, you can add a redirect. On this redirect you can choose a link model.

Though it seems simple, it doesn't always behave like you would expect.

My Question:
When is this link model used?
When is this link model not used?

I've been able to do the following findings:

- Linkmodel seems to be used if you create menu/pagecollection etc.

- Linkmodel on a redirect is NOT used if the page is requested directly [server redirect is send]

- Linkmodel of the redirect seems not to work if you add links to the page (the linkmodel of the link is used)

Are there more scenario's, is all above correct and/or is there documentation available on this link model in combination with redirects?
